Philip Basoa, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumawu for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has had his seat declared vacant by Speaker of the House Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
According to him, the choice was made after the passing of Mr. Basoa, 53, on March 27, 2023.
He said that as a result, he had ordered the Clerk to Parliament to send an official letter to the head of the Electoral Commission (EC) requesting that a by-election be held in the region.
He instructed the Clerk-to-Parliament to write to the EC and stated in a letter dated March 31, 2023, "I request you to take necessary consequence action as required by law."
It complies with Section 3 of the 1992 Ghana Constitution (Amendment) Act (Act 527), Announcement
This was announced by the Speaker last Friday when he officially informed the House of the vacancy caused by Mr. Basoa's passing.
The three-term Legislator Mr. Basoa allegedly passed away while receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The Speaker stated that the House had officially informed the EC chairwoman of their terrible colleague's passing, which had caused a vacancy in the House.
Advice
Following the passing of the Kumawu MP, Mr. Bagbin supported the request made by several lawmakers for Parliamentarians to take excellent care of their health.
He said that during his time as Majority Leader, he implemented a policy allowing every MP to visit the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for a thorough examination.
He said that at the time, more than 90 Lawmakers took advantage of the chance.
He emphasised that Parliament was "ready and eager" to help members in going for check-ups. "Some did not, and they gave me solid reason why they failed to take the chance of that offer," he added.
The Parliamentary Service Board and I will be happy to help the members, so leaders should take it up and contact us, he said.
Health risks
Recognizing the risks to members' health and how doing legislative job affects them, Even though he was discussing the members' health, Mr. Bagbin voiced concern that "some were not interested in listening to it."
"If you hear someone say, 'Die be die,' you can bet that person is not living his life to the fullest and is unaware that God made this planet for us to enjoy.
The reason they claim all "death be die" yet all "die no be dead" is because he is not alive, he said.
