bakersOlam Agri provides free medical screening to 1,100 bakers.
In Accra and Kumasi, Olam Agri, in collaboration with local regulatory authorities and medical professionals, provided free medical screening to over 1,100 bakers and their staff.
The initiative was part of the "My Healthy Baker" program, which aimed to improve bakers' health and food safety in the communities they served.
A total of 15 health screening drives have been conducted in Accra's Tema and Ashaiman townships, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Alajo, and some locations in Kumasi as part of the "Get Screened, Know Your Health Status" campaign, which is part of the "My Healthy Baker" programme launched in 2022.
These are carried out by medical personnel such as doctors, nurses, and laboratory technicians.
In addition to the health screening, participants are educated on good hygiene practices to ensure that optimal food safety standards are met at their respective bakeries.
Local authorities issue food handling certificates to bakers who have successfully passed the health screening checks, certifying their suitability to handle food.
Initiative
"We are committed to promoting health and safety in our communities," said Baibhav Biswas, Head of Olam Agri's grain business in Ghana.
He went on to say that regular health screenings and education on food safety practices could help to ensure the bakers' health, which he called an important factor in food safety.
Olam Agri has initiated programs along these lines over the years, including the "Bakers' Conference," a stakeholder engagement initiative designed to establish constant communication and direct engagement with bakers across the country on issues relating to their businesses, as well as to create a platform for collaborative brainstorming for solutions.
The company also organizes a series of training programs for bakers that focus on how to use their products efficiently for various baking purposes while reducing costs.
The business, established in 2012 by the late President John Evans Atta Mills, sources wheat grains from around the world to produce various types of wheat flour for various baking purposes, both for the local market and for export to neighboring Francophone countries.
With a strong emphasis on food safety and a long-term commitment to quality, the company has invested in high-quality infrastructure and qualified human resources to ensure the production of high-quality products that meet local and international standards.
The company's primary flour brands include First Choice, Royal Gold, and Vital.
