The five Manchester United players featured in the Newcastle defeat have uncertain futures at Old Trafford.

When assessing another away defeat in the Premier League, there is one aspect that stands out to the team Erik ten Hag has chosen to line up.

Up to five players in the starting XI have uncertain futures and may not be part of Manchester United's future. That's an unhealthy number towards the end of this season, although squad depth, injuries and suspensions leave Ten Hag with few options.

Here's a breakdown of the group of five who may not be part of United's future...

David de Gea

The Manchester United goalkeeper will be a free agent at the end of the current season. There are signs that he could stay at the club, The Athletic reports.

Currently, there is no agreement with David de Gea. If there should be, that's an entirely different matter.

De Gea is a divisive goalkeeper. A veteran is a top scorer, with obvious limitations in passes and defence. Now might be the time to try a different approach. United have a chance this summer to get a clean break.

Marcel Sabitzer

This match at Newcastle is a great opportunity for Marcel Sabitzer to make an impression and prove why he is a needed player.

Unfortunately, that was not an opportunity the lender took. While the Austria international could be a useful addition of depth at the right price, he hardly feels like an essential purchase after this performance. He still has two games left this week against Casemiro to try and show he can be a solution. The jury is still out.

Scott McTominay

Paul Scholes has called Scott McTominay the "perfect" replacement for Casemiro. He couldn't be more wrong.

McTominay was deemed inadequate against Newcastle. It's not for lack of effort, he's just not at the level Manchester United need.

The midfielder has been heavily linked with leaving Old Trafford. The Telegraph reports that Newcastle have been discussing his transfer for several months.

It makes sense to continue at the end of the season. Manchester United must grow in this position. Diogo Dalot

After being Manchester United's most improved player at the start of the season, Diogo Dalot has regressed.

The right-back's contract expires in June 2024 and while a decision to extend Luke Shaw's contract is imminent, there are no such developments with Dalot.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka seems to be the most reliable player at the moment when it comes to his presence. Dalot's contract situation means that if Manchester United sign a new right-back this summer, the Portuguese could leave.

Wout Weghorst

Another loanee, Wout Weghorst's contract at Manchester United runs until the remainder of the current season. With only two goals scored in 19 appearances, the Red Devils are unlikely to find a way to keep the Burnley striker.

Weghorst is at least reliable and it is likely he will join in as a replacement if Anthony Martial is sold, but the chances of landing the Dutchman are dwindling.
