Newcastle have beaten Man Utd in the Premier League to consolidate their place in the Champions League next season.

Alexander Isak had a great time against United

Alexander Isak hit back at Erik ten Hag's claims that Newcastle United liked to waste time by pointing out that his Manchester United side tried and couldn't do it on their own.

The United boss has criticized Newcastle's tactical approach in preparing for their game at St. James' Park at the weekend, but instead it was his team that sought to extend the time of the game.

Newcastle are the better team so far and fully deserved a 2-0 win, making 22 attempts in the game compared to United's six.

After the match, Isak was asked about Ten Hag's comments and was delighted to win playing in such an expansive style of play. "I don't really agree with that," he told reporters after the win. "We've worked hard and we're the team that wants to win.

"We are a team that wants to move the game forward. They took longer than us. I don't focus too much on that. I think we had a great performance."

Newcastle were much better than their Carabao Cup final performance two months ago, but Isak downplayed the revenge element as they failed to win the silver trophy.

He added:

"No. I'm not saying that, they still won the trophy. We wanted this trophy and we didn't win it. But this win is very important because Manchester United are our direct rivals in the table, because so it's nicer to have three points to yourself.

"It's a huge, huge win, a confidence booster for us and also huge for the table for the Champions League chase."

Newcastle moved ahead of United in the rankings with victory on Sunday afternoon, and Isak insists his side are in complete control of their destiny to secure a top four spot. He continued:

“We showed everything we can do all season, so it's nothing special. But it's a big step in the right direction for our goal.

"Hopefully we can use this win as motivation. We won't talk too much about it. We'll just play one game at a time and get the results we need.
