Lionel Messi's reaction when a section of fans inside the Parc des Princes 'booed and hissed' his name on Sunday night said a lot.

The 35-year-old striker, who has been closely linked with a return to former club Barcelona in recent weeks, has been subjected to whistles of displeasure ahead of their clash with Lyon in Ligue 1.

When his name was announced on the roster, some fans inside the 80,000-capacity stadium expressed their unwelcome feelings, although the Argentinian wasn't really too busy. mind the negative reaction.

Meanwhile, his PSG team-mate, Kylian Mbappe, received loud applause when the announcer read his name.

Spanish journalist Dani Gil, who was present on Sunday, recorded the reaction of fans. I said:

"The rift in the stands is unmistakable at this stage of the season, underlined by rumors of a possible return to Barcelona."

Paris Saint-Germain then lost the Ligue 1 clash following a 56th-minute strike from highly-rated striker Bradley Barcola.

But the negative reaction to Messi's appearance at the Parc des Princes has sparked a huge debate between fans and pundits.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video after the game, former Barcelona team-mate Thierry Henry said it was "embarrassing" to hear whistling from the stadium.

"You can't whistle one of the best players on the team, who has 13 goals and 13 assists this season," he said.

"Personally I would like to see him finish his career in Barcelona, ??in Europe. After that, I don't know what he will do. Because of the way he left Barcelona after everything he did… I really don't like that.

"For the love of football, he should return to Barcelona."

PSG coach Christophe Galtier also condemned the whistling in his post-match comments.

"I find it difficult," he said. “We're just waiting for Leo and Kylian [Mbappe] to unlock the game. "Leo is our creator, so he tries a lot and automatically wastes a lot, but around Leo you have to consider the function of the players. You can't expect everything from Leo. and Kylian Leo has tried and succeeded in a number of inappropriate or similar things, but he also lacks connection with his teammates.

"In my opinion, these whistles are unfair because Messi has given so much in the first part of the season. He is an assist and scorer in 2023. It's also up to others to do more and bring more danger."

Messi's future remains uncertain with his contract expiring at the end of the season. With that said, Barcelona vice president, ?Rafael Yuste, said that he has been in contact with Messi and his representatives.

He said, according to The Guardian:

"Leo and his family know the love I have for them.

“I was involved in negotiations but unfortunately did not lead to a certain outcome. I always had and I had a thorn in me that prevented Leo from continuing at our club. "Messi knows how much we appreciate him. I want him back. Of course we have contact with them.
