Liverpool may be increasingly concerned about the individual form of one of their most commonly trusted executives in Virgil van Dijk following another painful Premier League defeat.
The Merseysiders were completely overwhelmed by Manchester City, giving up surprisingly well in the second half of the game.
That being said, it's still unclear whether Number 4's misfortunes are a temporary setback related to the team's overall struggles or something more serious and permanent.
“It has to be said that Van Dijk will be the first to admit his level has dropped,” Neil Jones said of the 'remarkable' Dutch international in an article for GOAL.
“He knows he has to do better and his team needs him. Gullit and Van Basten may disagree, but few players have been more committed, more positive than the 31-year-old when it comes to self-assessment.
"The real question is whether it's a short-term drop, related to the problems with the team and the volume of football he's played since coming back from a knee injury. is about something more serious, something more permanent."
Given that the lack of midfield presence has had such a huge impact on the team, it's hard to separate the two.
Indeed, Alisson Becker was arguably the only consistent bright spot in the starting line-up throughout a campaign that completely defied expectations, which suggests to some extent Van Dijk's difficulties will be addressed. That is if the club invests heavily this summer.
Of course, how many surgeries can we get into without Champions League football.
With that said, Liverpool cannot afford to tighten their wallets this summer due to the widening gap between us and the top four. Hopefully we don't have to worry about bringing in a top-class centre-back in addition to new faces in midfield.
