It has been suggested that the media in Ghana and other African nations set the agenda for strategic investments in innovations that would help the continent combat the harmful effects of the global climate catastrophe.

Sabrina Trautman, a systems scientist and development consultant, who made the appeal, said the African media must stop expressing the climate problem in a reactive manner and adopt a more proactive one that focuses on spotlighting ideas and solutions, especially in the agriculture sector.

She emphasised once more that African journalists needed to be proactive in reporting on the core causes of climate-related crises in order to help prevent them, rather than waiting to report on loss and damages linked to climate change.

Because such tales urge action to be made to address the threats through policy, she continued, journalists should be permitted to write articles that state, "I can see danger approaching. I can see trees being cut down. Farmers are polluting waterbodies. I can see flood risks.

Ms. Trautman made the request during a two-day seminar on climate change held in South Africa for chosen African journalists and communicators by Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA).

Goals for the conference

Participants from Ghana, Kenya, Zambia, South Africa, Senegal, Mali, and Ethiopia travelled to Cape Town for the AICCRA spring school, which was hosted in conjunction with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), to learn about the effects of the global climate crisis on agriculture.

AICCRA strives to create an agriculturally innovative and climate-smart future for Africa.

The purpose of the conference was to discuss national, regional, continental, and international initiatives to support climate-smart agriculture, analyse the effects of climate change on African agriculture and food systems, and investigate ways to transform African agriculture and food systems for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

Also, it aimed to increase participants' understanding of how to formulate communications strategies, craft messages, and share knowledge on how to use digital technologies to produce engaging material for communication channels.
