Bayern Munich has struggled to find a replacement for Robert Lewandowski's departure and is now attempting to change that.

Following Tuesday's shocking 2-1 DFB-Pokal loss to Freiburg, Bayern Munich sports director Hasan Salihamidzic explained the club's ambitions to sign a new striker during the summer season.

Dayot Upamecano gave Thomas Tuchel's team the lead in their quarterfinal match, but Nicolas Hoefler's goal pulled them back, and Lucas Hoeler's 95th-minute penalty sent the Bundesliga's top team home.

Bayern will now miss the competition's final for the third consecutive season, and Salihamidzic was adamant that the club would need to buy a new striker in order to advance the following campaign.

After the game, he remarked, "Of course we'll sit down and see what we need to do in the transfer market."

Yet, as evidenced by the games, it would be neglectful to enter the new season with only Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Mathys Tel, Thomas Muller, and Sadio Mane.

"Very likely, a fresh striker will be used. The upcoming weeks will reveal whether it's Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen, or Randal Kolo Muani.

Bayern is still in first place in the Bundesliga and has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, but they have had trouble replacing Robert Lewandowski's contributions since he left for Barcelona at the end of the previous campaign.

In his final three seasons at Bayern, the Poland international scored 110 goals in just 94 league games as the team won three straight Bundesliga crowns and the Champions League.

This season, Choupo-Moting has been the line-leader in Lewandowski's absence, but he has only scored 10 goals in the league.

Salihamidzic remained upbeat about Tuchel's hiring despite the dismal outcome versus Freiburg and refrained from blaming the new manager for the loss.

Salihamidzic added, "It is painful for all of us, but it has nothing to do with the coach.

"It takes time. He is doing a fantastic job and makes a great impression. Although today was difficult for all of us, we will move forward on Saturday."
