Robert Lewandowski has disclosed that early in his career, when he received a call from renowned Old Trafford manager Sir Alex Ferguson, he was eager to join Manchester United. However, Borussia Dortmund and Jürgen Klopp prevented a possible transfer.
Lewandowski began his ascent through the Polish lower leagues at the age of 16, eventually joining Lech Poznan in the top division in 2008. He scored 41 goals in 82 appearances across all competitions during that time.
As a result, the young striker was able to join Borussia Dortmund in Germany and was a regular member of Klopp's team that won the 2010–11 Bundesliga title.
Lewandowski wasn't the prolific goal scorer he is now at that point in his career, but it looks Fergie and United instantly recognized his huge potential.
He was 22 at the time, which places it in or around July 2011 when United needed a new offensive boost and would sign Robin van Persie to lead their next attempt at the Premier League title the following year. It was during Dortmund's preseason at the time.
In a recent interview with Sport Bild, Lewandowski remembered, "I remember the situation exactly.
"We played a friendly against Dortmund, I believe, to prepare. During halftime, I was substituted. I checked my smartphone in the changing room. A text message with the sender +44 was received. Ferguson had made an attempt to call me and then messaged me. He desired to speak with me.
"I had a shower while still in the changing room, then summoned him back in a quiet area. I didn't speak English as well as I do now. His Scottish accent is very noticeable. I was so intent on grasping his meaning! Alex Ferguson talked gently in an effort to be respectful.
"I was 22 years old, and it was a memorable occasion. In the camp, I spoke with Jürgen Klopp and Aki Watzke. I wanted to visit Manchester United! But, they responded, "No chance, Robert. We require you. You must remain.
