Police in Carbonear, a town in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, have recovered thousands of dollars worth of stolen merchandise and arrested two women who are now facing charges.

According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), officers received a report on March 28 of a theft from a local business in Carbonear. The stolen items were identified as a large quantity of clothing, footwear, and accessories. The RNC investigation led to the identification of two suspects and the recovery of the stolen merchandise.

The two women, aged 37 and 42, were arrested on March 31 and charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property over $5,000. They were released on court undertakings and are scheduled to appear in court in May.

Following the arrests, the RNC conducted a search of a residence in Carbonear and recovered additional stolen merchandise from several other businesses. The total value of the recovered merchandise is estimated to be worth thousands of dollars.

The RNC is reminding businesses to be vigilant and to take steps to prevent theft, such as installing surveillance cameras and securing doors and windows.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of theft from businesses, particularly during the economic uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a report by the National Retail Federation, retail crime and theft cost US retailers an estimated $61.7 billion in 2019, with shoplifting accounting for 36.5% of those losses.

Small businesses, in particular, are vulnerable to theft, as they often have limited resources to invest in security measures. However, there are steps they can take to protect themselves, such as installing security cameras, training staff on theft prevention, and implementing inventory control systems.

In addition to the financial losses, theft from businesses can also have a significant impact on the community. It can lead to higher prices for consumers, reduced job security for employees, and a loss of trust in local businesses.

The RNC's swift action in recovering the stolen merchandise and apprehending the suspects is a positive step towards preventing further theft and protecting businesses in Carbonear.
