The world has evolved from relying solely on human
intelligence for work to using Artificial intelligence (AI) to finish a part or
an entire work. There are software or applications that help you to write
essays, translate different languages, solve mathematical problems and do other
tasks that could have been done by human intelligence only. Google Bard AI,
Chatsonic, OpenAI Playground, ChatGPT and Jasper Chat are some of the systems
that can easily solve problems and generate content for you. A part of the
Research for Policy book series (page 1) states that AI is capable of
performing tasks that require cognitive skills and operating with some degree
of autonomy. These may look like a relief for humans but they may serve as a
threat to some jobs. On March 26, 2023, Goldman Sachs released a report on the
potential effects of Generative Artificial Intelligence on the labour market.

In the report, Generative AI has the ability to produce
human-like output, understand and respond with natural language, images, audio
and video. The current version of OpenAI’s GPT model released in March 2023
scores 150 points higher on the SAT. This is revealing and frightening because
you can be taken out of work and your skills may become irrelevant if you do
not adapt to these new technologies. The world is experiencing rapid
technological change.

In the United States, AI can automate a quarter of current
work tasks. Works tasks that are highly exposed are administrative (46%) and
legal (44%) professions. The report also confirmed that tasks that require
intensive physical activities like construction (6%) and maintenance (4%) have
a low potential of being automated by Artificial Intelligence. Clerical support
workers, Technicians and Associate professionals, Managers, Armed Forces, Skilled
Agricultural workers, Forestry and Fishery workers, Service and Sales workers,
Elementary occupations, Plant and Machine Operations, and Craftworkers in
Europe have part of their jobs automated by AI. Clerical support workers have
the highest exposure (45%) and Craftworkers have a low exposure (4%).
Global estimates in emerging and developed market economies
were compared. Emerging markets are normally associated with developing
countries and advanced countries have the developed markets. The differences in
the composition and production approaches in industries in these economies were
considered. The estimates indicate that fewer professions in emerging markets
are exposed to AI. In Ghana, more than fifteen per cent of jobs are exposed to
automation. Globally, eighteen per cent of work has the possibility of being
automated on an employment-weighted basis.
Goldman Sachs continued to report that Artificial Intelligence’s
impact is momentous but most jobs are not fully exposed to automation. These
jobs are more likely to be complimented rather than replaced by Artificial
Intelligence and the size of its impact will depend on its capability and
adoption timeline. Massive disruption could be faced by the labour market if AI
fulfils its promised abilities but this disturbance will be balanced by the
emergence of new jobs.
These are a few findings from Goldman Sachs. The
world is already experiencing some of these impacts. One of the best ways to
stay relevant in the job market is to learn how to use these applications and
complement them with your skills to reduce your chances of experiencing a job
loss.
