Cody Gakpo has talked about his current position in Liverpool's tactical setup while acknowledging that he is unaware of the long-term strategy.
After struggling in his first few games, the Netherlands international joined Liverpool in January for a reported 35.4 million. In February and March, he started to feel more at ease and scored four goals, including two against Manchester United in a record 7-0 victory.
Despite Gakpo's improvement in play and the victory over Manchester United, Liverpool has struggled to win games lately and is currently on a streak of four games without a victory.
In a news conference, Gakpo talked about the team's recent struggles and their impending match against Arsenal while also highlighting some of their better recent performances.
"If you look at this game [against Chelsea], I think we earned a point and it is a modest step in the right direction. For me, it is something for the team to generate some momentum again and start winning games again," he stated.
"It's obviously slightly different when you don't have the home crowd's support, but I'm not sure. Simply put, we need to do better on the road. If you compare this game to the last, we ultimately made a step in the right direction, so even though we wanted to win, we still need to continue to develop and get better.
"We have a strong team, in my opinion, and a lot of talent. The margin [to Arsenal] is not that great, but we need to demonstrate it once again as we have in some other games.
"Unfortunately, we failed to demonstrate it in earlier games, costing us points, therefore we must do so now. We are aware of our capacities."
The forward also discussed the ambiguity surrounding his ideal position. Gakpo recently played as a number nine, but he acknowledged that he is unsure about his tactical future.
"I've played practically every game from that center position, so for me, it's just a matter of being comfortable there. You must question the management about the long-term strategy as I am unaware of it "Added he.
