3 OILS IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
(Holy Thursday's Chrism Mass)
- Rev. Fr. David Okolie write!
If, as a Catholic, you have been buying different kinds of oil for prayers, please, read through??
Dearest friends and fellow Catholics, I wish to inform you that the Catholic Church has only 3 APPROVED OILS for use in the Church and these 3 oils are EXCLUSIVELY in the possession of PRIESTS; who get them immediately after CHRISM MASS with their Bishops (Cf. Can. 847). The oils are in their possession because they are only those who have the AUTHORITY to celebrate the Sacraments. These oils are renewed every year at Chrism Mass.
This Chrism Mass usually comes up on Holy Thursdays; unless pastoral exigencies takes it to another day within the Holy Week.
The 3 OILS are:
1. Oil of the Sick,
2. Oil of the Catechumens, and
3. Holy Chrism Oil.
The above 3 oils are used in the celebration of the following Sacraments:
Anointing of the Sick: (Oil of the Sick),
Baptism: (Oil of the Catechumens and Holy Chrism Oil),
Confirmation: (Holy Chrism Oil),
Priestly Ordination: (Holy Chrism Oil),
Episcopal Ordination: (Holy Chrism Oil).
Dearest friends, did you see any of the other widespread oils in the above list? Can you now understand the difference?
Therefore, when next, for example, you have a critically sick person or a very old person, do not continue rubbing this and that oil on the person; instead, go and call the priest to use the approved Oil of the Sick on the person which is capable of cleansing the person's sins and also bringing about his/her healing, if God wills it. Even if the person dies after receiving the Sacrament, his/her salvation is ensured (Cf. James 5:14-15, CCC, n. 1513). You, as a lay faithful, should always have HOLY WATER which you should always sprinkle around your home and on yourself to ward off the attacks of the devil and his agents. The Holy Water is approved by the Church and can always support you before the priest arrives in more serious cases. Also note that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can be received as often as the sickness/old age continues. This means that the healthy members of the family should always make out time to go and call the priest to visit their sick/old ones. It is the RIGHT of every baptized member of the Church. Always feel free to go and call your priest. Also, do not fail to have the PHONE NUMBER of your priests in case of emergency (critical illness/danger of death).
Finally, always pray for your priests. You can also ADVISE them but please, do not speak ILL of them. They are really laboring tirelessly for your temporal well-being, as well as your salvation and theirs.
Please, make out time today and say ‘THANK YOU, FR.' to any priest you know, beginning with me
Happy Anniversary to all my priest brothers all over the world
Remain blessed
