The idea of motivation is one of those sweet things we love to hear or feel. Most of the time by instinct , we know what we are talking about when we talk about motivation , but it can be very difficult to define and formulate concrete ideas. Motivation is often defined as :

  1. A person’s general desire to do something.
  2. The reason (s) why someone acts or behaves in a certain way.

To me , I like to define motivation as “ moral inertia” , it is the energy and direction behind our behaviors.

In this article, we will bring out some few tips that might be able to affect your motivation.

5 Motivation Tips For Fitness

  1. Use extrinsic and intrinsic Motivation
  2. Do not rely on motivation; Get the most out of it
  3. Enforce the problem
  4. Go beyond motivation
  5. Always look at growth instead of outcome

Use Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation

It is often assumed that motivation comes from within. Something  we have to pick up every time we have to train on it . However, motivation doesn’t only come from from within ( internal) , but can also come from an external source as well.

Intrinsic motivation most of the times comes from the intrinsic rewards we receive when we engage in a task of activity, such as sports. For instance, you might be motivated to do sports because you find it enjoyable or rewarding. Or maybe the motivation comes from identifying yourself as someone who enjoys sports, making your identity your motivation. Identify, naming and focusing on these intrinsic motivators can be helpful to a lot of people.

An extrinsic motivation arises from gaining an extrinsic benefit by engaging in a particular behavior. An instance is rewarding yourself for training. It can be like getting yourself new training outfits after a exercising for some days. Or maybe your give yourself some nice treatment after each workout.

Don’t Rely on Motivation; Get the Most Out of it

The most seldom discussed dirty secrets about motivation is that , it is much better to keep going than to start. A lot of people look for motivation to start behaviors like exercise, but motivation is actually much more helpful when wanting to start something new.

Think of motivation as a source of energy that helps to keep you busy and working on something in the early stages , not as a catalyst that triggers one’s behavior.

That’s a huge oversimplification, but there are two ways to find motivation:

  1. You wait and hope to find it
  2. You force the problem

Waiting and hoping to find it , the expectation is:

  1. When I feel mentally, I train
  2. I will try to motivate myself to do so through internal incentives
  3. I will watch motivational videos on YouTube before training to build muscle mass.

Wit this approach the problem is , you don’t control when or if you feel motivated.

Forcing the Problem looks like this :

  1. I have an exercise schedule on my calendar so I have to do it.
  2. I have signed up for 3k in one month, so I need to train.
  3. I sold my car and bought a bicycle, so I have to cycle to work.

Go Beyond Motivation

Motivation is simply a passing feeling of being better of being between two behavioral states. Most people don’t need motivation to brush in the morning or in the evening. They did this when they were young , but eventually it became a requirement or a habit of behavior.

If you really think about the role of motivation, it really is behavioral inertia. It is a force that helps transition from the behavioral state to another. The ultimate goal of motivating exercise is to convert behavior into a new habit.

Always Look at Growth instead of outcome

Most people lose motivation or at least partially stop pursuing their goal as they begin to focus very intensely on the outcome. When the outcome becomes too difficult, too distant, or too ambiguous, our motivation falters.

The late Kobe Bryant when asked in an interview whether he loved to win or hate to lose?

He responded by saying.” Neither do I , which means I play to figure things out. I play to learn something new. Because if you play with the fear of failure or with the desire to win , it is still a weakness.
