Bayern Munich finds itself in the unique situation of being the underdog versus Manchester City in their Champions League quarterfinal.
The best football in Europe is played by Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, according to Thomas Tuchel, head coach of Bayern Munich.
In the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal matchup, the Bavarian team will travel to the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday to take on an energetic City team.
In addition to closing in on Premier League leaders Arsenal, Guardiola's team has won seven straight games across all competitions, leaving their supporters dreaming of a potential treble. They have also advanced to the quarterfinals of both the Champions League and the FA Cup.
Tuesday's game will be only Tuchel's fourth as Bayern's head coach since taking over for the fired Julian Nagelsmann, and his team enters the contest as underdogs to win the tournament despite having won the illustrious trophy just last season (2019–20).
Tuchel praised Guardiola's influence on City and put them among the best teams in Europe, but he also believes it makes the chance to knock them out of Europe much more alluring given that he defeated the Citizens in the 2020–21 final when managing Chelsea.
At his pre-game press conference, Tuchel told the media, "I think you can clearly see that there's six or seven years of Pep in this team, highly offensive with and without the ball, extreme high pressing."
"In my opinion, Pep consistently demonstrates that he gives his teams his personal touch. By competing against his teams, I can pick up football knowledge that helps me as a coach. What he's doing there is unusual. In comparison to former years, they play with a lot more ease.
"It represents the pinnacle of European football. It is also evident in the league. The assignment is appealing as a result. Together, we must find a solution. Maybe tomorrow we'll be a little bit the underdog, but we have to believe in ourselves."
Erling Haaland, a striker for City who joined from Borussia Dortmund, has been the team's main offensive force this season, scoring 44 goals in all competitions in just his first season in England.
