Chelsea want to sign Atletico Madrid striker permanently, player is also interested - Romano
According to reliable transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are keen to keep Atletico Madrid striker Joao Felix at the club as part of their long-term plans.
Felix left Atletico Madrid for Chelsea in the January transfer window after being frustrated with life at Civitas Metropolitano. The deal is a loan until the end of the season with no purchase option.
Rojiblancos even pocketed a €11m loan fee for Felix and extended his contract until 2027 before sending him to Chelsea to protect his worth. The Blues also had to pocket his entire salary. Felix has so far failed to make the biggest impression in his brief stint in west London, scoring just two goals in 12 games. However, it should be noted that the whole team is struggling and the 23-year-old has at least shown some light on the pitch.
And according to Romano, the Chelsea board are very pleased with Felix and want him permanently so he can be part of the club's long-term plans.
Furthermore, the Italian transfer expert added that Felix himself is very pleased with the way things are going at Chelsea, with his teammates and also with Man City.
However, any deal this summer will depend on two key factors. First, the contribution of whoever will take over as Chelsea's next manager will have to be considered.
After eliminating Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, Chelsea appointed Frank Lampard as interim manager until the end of the season. He will likely be replaced by someone else this summer and his opinion on Félix will be taken into consideration.
Furthermore, negotiations between the two clubs will also be essential to the operation, as there is no buyback option in the loan agreement.
For their part, Atletico Madrid will likely demand a fee of around 100 million euros for Felix to recoup most of what they have invested in his 2020 signing. So there is still a long way to go to see if Felix can stay at Chelsea beyond the current season. For now, players and clubs want to expand their partnership.
