According to former Premier League striker Chris Sutton, Leicester City are "in complete panic" after sacking Brendan Rodgers at the end of the season.
Former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith was appointed until the end of the season on Monday after former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch is said to have denied their external link.
“The owner made a mess,” said Sutton.
Leicester are second from bottom and two points away from safety with eight games remaining.
"It's amazing what happened," added Sutton, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club ahead of Smith's appointment. “They have fired an experienced coach with a good record, things have not gone well this season, but I don't understand why this situation happened.
“We had an international break, if they weren't happy with Rodgers at the time, they should have sacked him and brought in a replacement.
“I think in this multibillion dollar industry, clubs plan for every eventuality, so if a manager leaves, they have a list of replacements available – Leicester do not.
"They made it up when they went on and it was absolute panic."
Leicester have lost seven of their last eight Premier League games and travel to Manchester City on April 15.
Crystal Palace replaced Patrick Vieira with Roy Hodgson late last month and won their first two games under the 75-year-old to take six points from their last three. Sutton doesn't think anyone who replaces Rodgers can have the same impact.
"Leicester is in trouble and it doesn't matter who comes," he said.
“If you owned Leicester you would expect them to have the Roy Hodgson effect, but it doesn't really work out that way.
"I'm really scared for them."
