Gabriel Martinelli could anger Liverpool fans by setting new Premier League record against West Ham
Gabriel Martinelli could anger Liverpool by setting a new Premier League record in Arsenal's weekend clash with West Ham.
Manchester City picked up momentum in the title race at the weekend after leaders Arsenal squandered their two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Liverpool at Anfield.
Arsenal, who haven't beaten Liverpool since 2012, missed their chance to win eight points from the top of the Premier League.
While the Gunners are still 6 points ahead of Man City at the top of the Premier League, Pep Guardiola's army has a match yet to play and still has to welcome Arsenal to the Etihad at the end of April.
Although Mikel Arteta's men may have their eyes on the clash with City, their focus this week will be on the weekend's game against West Ham. Martinelli in particular will look on Sunday as he prepares to set a new Premier League record.
Martinelli's Premier League record
Martinelli could surpass Roberto Firmino to become the Brazilian player with the most goals in a Premier League season against West Ham.
If the 21-year-old Arsenal winger scores a brace against Irons, he will surpass Firmino's record of 15 goals set by the 31-year-old in 2017/18.
Martinelli currently has 14 Premier League goals, equal to his two compatriots in the past.
Gabriel Jesus scored 14 goals for Man City in the 2019/2020 season, while Robinho scored the same for the Sky Blues in the 2008/2009 season. Martinelli has been one of Arsenal's star players this season and even earned praise from club legend Ray Parlor following the Gunners' 2-2 draw with Liverpool.
"He's on another level," Parlor told Premier League Productions.
“I thought that would be an area where Arsenal could have fun.
“We knew Trent could be vulnerable and Martinelli took advantage of that. He brilliantly picked Jesus for the second goal. Martinelli is a livewire, we all know that.
