As his loan at Sunderland expires next month, Manchester United winger Amad Diallo hopes to return to the team and compete for a spot in the first team the next season.
On the strength of just a few senior appearances in Italy, United agreed to pay up to £37 million in October 2020 to acquire Amad from Atalanta. The transfer was completed in January of the following year.
The Ivorian was signed at the same time as Uruguayan superstar Facundo Pellistri, who was acquired from Penarol for just a tenth of the cost at about £8 million, was. Pellistri had to wait much longer for his United debut, but under Erik ten Hag, opportunities have started to materialize.
By the end of the 2020–21 campaign, Amad has made eight appearances for United, scoring once, including against AC Milan in the Europa League. Yet as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tenure came to an end, the club began to suffer, and only one more opportunity came before a loan to Rangers.
Amad, at 20 years old, was sent on loan to Sunderland in the Championship after making 13 appearances and scoring three goals there.
He has made 32 league appearances for the Black Cats so far, scoring 11 goals and dishing out two assists. In December, he was named the PFA Vertu Motors Championship Fans' Player of the Month.
Amad, though, sees his future as being firmly rooted in Manchester thanks to a contract at Old Trafford that runs until 2025 and the chance to work with a manager well known for developing young talent.
There's no need to worry about things you can't control, he told FourFourTwo. "I know [the transfer fee] was a lot of money, but I didn't really think about that."
I was overjoyed to join Manchester United, a team with a rich history and international renown. I haven't yet given them my best, but I'm hoping to return the next season and showcase my skills. My ultimate goal is to play regularly for Manchester United.
