For the past few months, Pedro Goncalves of Sporting CP has attracted the attention of Tottenham Hotspur, according to sources.
Spurs are still making plans for the summer transfer window despite the fact that managing director of football Fabio Paratici has been suspended pending the outcome of a global football ban. Spurs' top priority is to find a long-term replacement for former head coach Antonio Conte.
The north London club is looking at a number of players to bolster their existing lineup, and 90min has learned that one player who has caught their attention in particular is Goncalves.
As far as 90min is aware, Spurs were first interested in the 24-year-old when conducting scouting missions for Pedro Porro, who switched teams from Sporting on the final day of the January transfer window.
Goncalves made a big impression on representatives from Tottenham, who have since kept track of his progress.
Goncalves has been observed by Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Newcastle United this season, but Spurs are thought to be the team most interested in signing him.
The professional career of the Portugal international began at Wolves, where he only made one senior-level appearance before being sold to Familicao in 2019.
In part as a replacement for Bruno Fernandes, who was pursued by Spurs before joining Manchester United in January of the same year, Goncalves moved to Sporting in the summer of 2020.
Sporting won their first league title in 19 years during his debut season in Lisbon, scoring 23 goals in 32 games.
Goncalves scored 56 goals and provided 31 assists in 120 games for Sporting during the course of the next two seasons, continuing his remarkable goal scoring performance, however Fernando Santos significantly left him off the Portuguese team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Goncalves can play on either wing, as a ten, or in the center of midfield, which is very appealing to Tottenham because they need to improve in all of these positions.
According to a recent 90min report, Spurs are one of the front-runners in the summer transfer battle for James Maddison from Leicester City.
