Enzo Fernandez has been urged to "lead" for Chelsea in their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal matchup against Real Madrid by interim boss Frank Lampard.
The Blues are in terrible form heading into their matchup with the European champions, having lost their last four Premier League games, including Lampard's first game in charge against Wolves at the weekend, which Chelsea defeated 1-0.
Before the match against Real Madrid, Lampard urged the club's record-signing to be present on Wednesday night to put an end to the rot.
Lampard addressed the gathered journalists, "Chelsea brought in some younger players throughout this season. We had to give them an opportunity to develop into the leaders we want them to be.
"Enzo is developing into a leader, but he's only 22, so I think it's hard for us to talk about that; he still needs to figure things out. Games like the one tonight are a terrific opportunity to shine and display the qualities that make you a good leader.
When a team like ours performs below the standards we set, it is common for people to question our character. At times of defeat, it's often one of the first things to be questioned. The only thing the players can do is demonstrate it in front of the crowd on the field.
The World Cup winner joined the club on January deadline day for an astounding £106.8 million, but he has only scored once in 12 games. Fernandez will be trying to score his first goal for the Blues on Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Todd Boehly, a co-owner of Chelsea, made the stunning prediction that the Blues would defeat holders Real Madrid 3-0 on Wednesday.
Chelsea's domestic campaign came to a tragic end, therefore for the rest of the year, their only goal is to win the Champions League, as it is probably their only chance to return to the league the following year.
