COPING WITH HEARTBURN DURING PREGNANCY

Heartburn is a common symptom during pregnancy, affecting up to 80% of women at some point during their pregnancy. It is caused by the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the muscles of the digestive system, allowing stomach acid to rise up into the esophagus. While it can be uncomfortable, there are several ways to cope with heartburn during pregnancy.


  1. Eat small, frequent meals: Instead of three large meals, try eating several smaller meals throughout the day. This can help reduce the amount of food in your stomach at one time and decrease the likelihood of acid reflux.

  2. Avoid trigger foods: Certain foods can trigger heartburn, such as spicy, greasy, or acidic foods. Pay attention to which foods tend to cause heartburn for you and avoid them.

  3. Drink plenty of water: Drinking water can help dilute stomach acid and reduce the risk of heartburn. Try sipping on water throughout the day, rather than drinking large amounts at once.

  4. Don't lie down after eating: Wait at least two to three hours after eating before lying down or going to bed. This allows time for food to digest and reduces the risk of acid reflux.

  5. Elevate your upper body: Elevating your upper body can help reduce heartburn symptoms. Use pillows to prop yourself up while sleeping or sitting, or try using a wedge pillow specifically designed for pregnancy.

  6. Wear loose-fitting clothing: Tight-fitting clothing can put pressure on the abdomen and increase the risk of heartburn. Opt for loose-fitting clothing, especially around the waist.

  7. Try natural remedies: Certain natural remedies may help relieve heartburn during pregnancy, such as ginger, chamomile tea, and chewing gum.

  8. Talk to your doctor: If heartburn is severe or persistent, talk to your doctor about safe over-the-counter antacids or other medications that may be helpful.

Remember, heartburn is a common symptom during pregnancy, but there are several ways to manage it. By eating small, frequent meals, avoiding trigger foods, drinking plenty of water, not lying down after eating, elevating your upper body, wearing loose-fitting clothing, trying natural remedies, and talking to your doctor, you can cope with heartburn and enjoy a more comfortable pregnancy.
