The Accra West Area of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has collected GH750,000 from 52 consumers who were discovered to have made unauthorised connections, including taxes and administrative fees.

According to the company's data, the clients consumed power unlawfully for up to 550,000 kilowatt hours (kWh).

Meter bypass, meter manipulation, and direct connection to electricity sources were among the prohibited activities.

In the first 10 days of the ongoing operation to collect debts owing to the firm and keep track of the condition of its meter installations in client facilities, according to the ECG Accra West Region, investigators discovered the illegalities.

Dr. Mark Owusu-Ansah, the revenue protection manager for the ECG Accra West Area, praised the field team's alertness in spotting the violations.

He claimed that the intricacy of the violations demonstrated some customers' determination to prevent the firm from receiving payment for the power they consumed.

These clients' power has been turned off, and they have been surcharged for the electricity they used without paying as well as fined for their unlawful behavior.

Moreover, he added, "Depending on the seriousness of the offense, we will turn over some instances to the police for prosecution."

Hope

Dr. Owusu-Ansah continued by saying that the business believed that such examples would serve as a warning to other clients to prevent any future inclinations toward improper use of authority.

Employees of the ECG have started a campaign to contact every client to seek payment of debts owing the organization since March 20 of this year.

Emmanuel Akinie, the ECG's general manager for Accra West, stated that the business was extensively investing in technology to enable it to detect consumers who were engaging in unlawful activities.

In order to get real-time updates on what is happening on a customer's property, we have piloted a few smart meter solutions.

When the meter case is opened, bypassed, or otherwise interfered with, it alerts our office, he said.

More of these smart meters will be introduced, according to Mr. Akinie, in an effort to combat fraud.

There are eight active districts in the Accra West Region.

Ablekuma, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Korle Bu, and Nsawam are their names.
