Lionel Messi is set to return to Barcelona after two years away from Catalonia this summer.
That's according to Catalunya Radio (opens in a new tab), who claim that the Argentinian has told current Barca coach and former team-mate Xavi that he wants to return to the club. Before Xavi came to power, the club had to let their godly No 10 go on a free transfer in 2021 after failing to meet the La Liga financial regulations needed to sign the star.
Messi moved to Barcelona at the age of 13 from South America to start his football career and win it all in the domestic league after being promoted to La Masia. Since joining Paris Saint-Germain, he has won his seventh Ballon d'Or and lifted the World Cup with his native Argentina in Qatar last year. There have been plenty of rumors that the MLS could actually drive the star away from Europe, but given his emotional connection to Barcelona, ??the possibility of a return to the Blaugrana is said to have always appealed to Messi and his family. . Renewing his contract with PSG seems unlikely, as the club are currently in the process of change.
According to a report by El Nacional (opens in a new tab) more than a year ago, Messi's wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, supported a return to Catalonia, although Messi's father Jorge opposed the idea. Jorge Messi believes Barca president Joan Laporta has "betrayed" his son, after he campaigned for the presidency of the club in 2021 with the task of keeping the star at Camp Nou.
Messi has the option to activate a third year at PSG if he wants to.
