After his team's Thursday 2-2 draw with Sevilla, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag didn't seem upbeat about Lisandro Martinez's potentially critical injury.
In the game, United had a 2-0 lead and appeared to be cruising to a fourth Europa League semifinal in as many seasons. Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire's two late own goals provided an otherwise weak Sevilla a fresh edge in the match before the second leg in Spain.
Martinez was dragged off the field while the Premier League team was leading 2-1, which only made matters worse. Ten Hag had already used all five of his allotted replacements at that point, forcing United to finish the game with 10 players and ultimately allowing the second goal to be scored.
When Martinez was running with the ball toward the end of the game, he suddenly fell down without being touched by an opponent. The Argentine was worrisomely clutching the back of his right foot and ankle. Martinez, who joined from Ajax last summer, has grown to be a firm fan favorite.
Ten Hag told BT Sport, "We've seen Lisandro slip out in a split second where there was no opponent engaged so that does not seem ideal." "At this time, I can't say [how serious it is],"
The United manager also revealed that Raphael Varane's halftime withdrawal was due to an injury, the precise degree of which is still unknown.
Martinez's descent and apparent awareness of anything being wrong have led to widespread conjecture that an Achilles issue may be to blame. The worst case situation would be a ruptured Achilles tendon, a catastrophic injury that can often take up to a year to fully heal from.
Both United employees and supporters will hope it's not that serious. And more details won't be known until until tests and scans are completed in the upcoming days.
