Paul Scholes has criticized Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after the club surrendered to Sevilla.

United got through to the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla after Marcel Sabitzer scored a brace in the first half.

However, the La Liga side had a bad ending for Ten Hag's men. First, United defender Tyrell Malacia put the ball past David De Gea in dying embers to provide a lifeline for Sevilla.

Then, two minutes into injury time, Youssef En-Nesyri's header hit Harry Maguire and went straight into the net. United's Europa League aspirations now hinge on producing a positive result in the return of Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan next Thursday, a game they will play without top scorer Marcus Rashford, people who are traumatized.

Meanwhile, their first-choice centre-back pairing, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, could also be out, as both were sent off in the second half against Sevilla.

Scholes on the surrender of the United States

United legend Scholes lamented the "smugness" displayed by Ten Hag's side and insisted the Old Trafford owners should have done more to prevent the game from slipping out of their hands.

Scholes told BT Sport after the game:

"Great result for Sevilla. Man Utd played very calmly in the second half, they didn't create any chances. “These subs have weakened the team… you understand that Anthony Martial is fragile. But in the second half, United were really sloppy. If the away goal remains, United will face an uphill battle.

"You've seen enough to see Sevilla not playing well, but it will be difficult. United were too complacent, too confident. Sevilla didn't play well in the first half. “United played so well and were so confident – ??you think it would be 3, 4, 5-0 and it would be even tonight. The second half was a complete disaster.

"Sir Alex Ferguson will not allow us to be complacent in the second half of the quarter-finals. It's time to win this game. You guys win here tonight. It should be 3, 4, 5-0.

"Malacia should have dealt with that first goal - he wasn't aware of the danger - and from there it was a really tough night. From there it just kept getting worse... injury, suspension, then they conceded a second goal.

“We just arrived [they took off the accelerator]. Bosses shouldn't let them slow down in a big European quarter-final.
