Former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane is accused of hitting Leroy Sane following Bayern Munich's 3-0 loss to Champions League rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
Leroy Sane has asked Bayern Munich officials not to punish Sadio Mane too harshly for their altercation following the Manchester City game.
Mane, 31, has been dropped by Bayern Munich and fined for allegedly hitting Sane after their 3-0 loss at the Etihad on Tuesday. The former Liverpool forward will not play in Bayern's Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim this Saturday at the Allianz Arena.
Former Manchester City winger Sane is said to want to put the incident behind him and focus on Bayern's season. Thomas Tuchel's team is aiming to retain the Bundesliga title and is currently two points ahead of Dortmund in second place.
According to SPORT1, Sane discussed the incident with Bayern's hierarchy. The Germany international is said to have asked them not to punish Mane harshly in order to keep the dispute from dragging on any longer than necessary.
Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Khan and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic are said to be waiting for a reaction from Mane, who could be shown the door if he does not have a strong finish to the season. In Germany, the Senegalese star has struggled to find his best form.
Mane has 11 goals and five assists for Bayern since joining from Liverpool last summer, but a leg injury has hampered his progress and forced him to miss the World Cup in Qatar. Nonetheless, the forwarddoes not have much time to silence his detractors.
After Saturday's match against Hoffenheim, Bayern will have only six Bundesliga games left this season. They are already out of the DFB-Pokal after a shock home defeat to Freiburg, and their chances of qualifying for the Champions League are slim after Tuesday's debacle.
Man City will take a commanding lead to the Allianz Arena this Wednesday thanks to goals from Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and Erling Haaland. Sane and Mane began arguing shortly after the latter replaced Jamal Musiala in the 69th minute.
Following a breakdown in communication between the two, Sane and Mane began rowing. The argument is said to have continued into the locker room, where Mane allegedly hit Sane in the face. Mane was reportedly dissatisfied with the way Sane addressed him.
Bayern Munich issued a statement on Thursday, breaking their silence on the matter. It said, "Sadio Mane, 31, will be absent from FC Bayern's squad for Saturday's home match against 1899 Hoffenheim. This is due to his behavior following Bayern's Champions League match against Manchester City. Mane will be fined as well."
According to Mirror Football, Mane was grieving the death of a close family member, his aunt, when the incident occurred on Tuesday.
Sane, who was known the Professional Footballers' Association's Young Player of the Year while at Manchester City, will also be looking to finish strong. Since leaving Manchester for Bayern Munich in July 2020, he has 37 goals in 125 games.
