HISTORY OF KANBON NAKPEM ZIBLIM

Kanbon nakpem Ziblim was a prominent chief in Ghana who served as the Paramount Chief of the Mamprugu Traditional Area. He was born in the early 1940s and grew up in the northeastern part of Ghana. His family was deeply rooted in the traditional customs and practices of the Mamprusi people, and his early apprenticeship under his father helped shape his leadership skills.


Kanbon nakpem Ziblim ascended to the throne in 2000, succeeding his predecessor, Naa Mahamadu Abdulai. His leadership was marked by a focus on development programs aimed at improving the living standards of his people. During his reign, he initiated several programs aimed at improving education, health, agriculture, and infrastructure development in the Mamprugu Traditional Area.


One of the most significant accomplishments of Kanbon nakpem Ziblim's reign was the establishment of the Bawku West District, which became a separate administrative unit from the Bawku Municipality. He also played a key role in conflict resolution, particularly during the Bawku conflict that erupted between the Mamprusi and Kusasi ethnic groups.


Kanbon nakpem Ziblim was a respected leader and one of the few paramount chiefs in Ghana who spoke English fluently. His communication skills were instrumental in building bridges between his people and the government of Ghana. He was also a strong advocate for the preservation of traditional culture and values, and he worked tirelessly to protect the customs and practices of the Mamprusi people.


In recognition of his contributions to the development of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, Kanbon nakpem Ziblim was honored with several awards and accolades, including the prestigious National Best Farmers award in 2003. He was also a member of the National House of Chiefs and the Northern Regional House of Chiefs.


Kanbon nakpem Ziblim passed away on August 8, 2021, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital after a brief illness. His death was mourned by the people of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, and he was given a befitting burial that reflected the respect and admiration that he had earned during his lifetime.
