Dr. Hilla Liman was a Ghanaian politician who served as the third President of the Republic of Ghana from September 1992 to January 1993. He was born on December 12, 1944, in Nandom, a town in the Upper West region of Ghana. Throughout his life, Liman became known for his political and academic achievements, demonstrating his commitment to public service and development.


Liman was a graduate of the University of Ghana, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Physics in 1967. He went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of London, England. After completing his studies, Liman returned to Ghana and became a lecturer of Mathematics, serving at several universities in the country, including the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi and the University of Ghana in Accra.


Liman's career in politics began when he joined the People's National Party (PNP) in 1980. He was subsequently elected to the Parliament of Ghana as a Member of Parliament representing his hometown of Nandom. Liman continued to make significant contributions to Parliament and was soon appointed as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.


In 1992, amidst the return to multi-party democracy in Ghana, Liman stood as a presidential candidate of the People's National Convention (PNC), a party formed on the principles of socialism, democracy, and self-determination. He won the election, defeating the incumbent President Jerry John Rawlings, 58% to 42%. His presidency was marked by a period of economic hardship and political instability, leading to a military coup d'tat on January 7, 1993. Liman was subsequently arrested by the new government and had his assets seized.


Despite these challenges, Dr. Hilla Liman remained committed to his ideals and the development of Ghana. He continued to work for the betterment of the country, serving on various committees and organizations to promote national cohesion and unity. Liman's contributions to Ghanaian politics and the academic community remain significant, and his legacy continues to inspire many in Ghana and beyond.
