MOTHER TERESA
Mother Teresa, born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia in 1910, was a Catholic nun who dedicated her life to serving the poor and sick. She became a nun at the age of 18 and traveled to India to work as a teacher. While there, she was moved by the poverty and suffering she saw and felt called to help the sick and destitute.
In 1948, Mother Teresa received permission from the Vatican to start her own order, the Missionaries of Charity. The order's primary mission was to serve "the poorest of the poor," providing basic care for the sick and dying, and serving the destitute and forgotten.
Mother Teresa's order grew quickly, and by the 1990s, there were more than 4,000 sisters in the Missionaries of Charity order, serving in more than 100 countries. In addition to her work with the poor, Mother Teresa was also an advocate for peace and nonviolence, receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
Throughout her life, Mother Teresa continued to serve the poorest of the poor, even when it meant risking her own health and safety. She became known as the "Saint of the Gutters" for her work in the slums of Kolkata, India, where she established homes for the dying and destitute. Her order also ran soup kitchens, clinics, and schools to serve the poor.
Mother Teresa passed away in 1997, but her legacy lives on. She was beatified by the Catholic Church in 2003, recognizing her as a blessed and saintly figure. Her work has inspired countless people around the world to serve the poor and needy, and her message of love and compassion continues to resonate today.
When Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997, at the age of 87, it was a significant loss for the Catholic Church and the world at large. She had spent her entire life serving the poorest of the poor, and her work had touched countless lives.
After her death, Mother Teresa was mourned by people all around the world, and her funeral was attended by thousands of people, including heads of state, religious leaders, and ordinary people who had been inspired by her work.
The Catholic Church began the process of beatification, which is the first step towards sainthood, and Mother Teresa was declared "Blessed" by Pope John Paul II in 2003. This recognition was based on the testimony of those who had witnessed her life of service and the miraculous healing of a woman who had prayed to Mother Teresa after her death.
Today, Mother Teresa's legacy lives on through the Missionaries of Charity, the order she founded, which continues to serve the poorest of the poor around the world. Her life and work have inspired countless people to dedicate themselves to serving others, and her message of love and compassion continues to resonate with people of all faiths and backgrounds.
