Frank Lampard criticises Graham Potter for a Chelsea problem that he is unable to resolve
According to Frank Lampard, the Chelsea team he took over is not physically prepared, and he does not have the time to make changes.
This month, Lampard was welcomed back to Stamford Bridge for a second stint as the team's interim manager after Graham Potter was fired by the Blues administration after only six months in charge. But the Chelsea legend's return hasn't exactly been a happily ever after; after Saturday's depressing 2-1 loss to Brighton, Lampard has now dropped all three of his matches since taking over as manager.
And with a testing trip to Real Madrid in the Champions League on the horizon, For Lampard and the struggling Blues, who he feels are not physically equal to some of their domestic opponents, things are not expected to get any better.
After Saturday's loss to Brighton, Lampard said: "Right now, it's more meetings and chats than training pitch stuff. Due of the [tiredness] in the legs, the training pitch material was all rather basic and low level.
"Talking to the guys individually is more important. I believe the squad needs some physical work when we do have the opportunity to work. That's crucial, in my opinion, because we're not at the limit right now and at this level you have to be.
“I think that can be a capacity thing with the players for whatever reason. It doesn’t matter how we got there but it needs to be addressed now.”
According to Frank Lampard, the Chelsea club he took over earlier this month is not physically prepared.
Chelsea is struggling to compete in the Premier League, and their overstuffed team has come under intense scrutiny for falling short of expectations. This is especially true given that new club co-owner Todd Boehly splashed out over £300 million on new players during the January transfer window in an effort to turn the Blues' season around.
In a sly jab at previous manager Graham Potter, Frank Lampard claimed that Chelsea players were not physically fit enough. Since the Englishman returned to the club as interim manager, the Blues have lost all three of their games, and the task will not get any easier with Real Madrid as the opposition in the Champions League.
The 44-year-old Lampard's return to Stamford Bridge has not gone as well as he had planned because he has not managed to witness any significant improvement in play. Only Kepa Arrizabalaga's heroics in net prevented Brighton from playing West London off the park on Saturday. The west Londoners have only scored once in his three outings as manager.
In order to rescue their season, Chelsea must overturn a two-goal deficit against the defending Champions League champions Real Madrid this week. In an apparent dig at previous manager Potter, Lampard reviewed the club's struggles this season and said that his players weren't as fit as they should be.
"As of right now, it has been mostly conversations and meetings than training pitch stuff,” he explained when asked about his side’s preparation for midweek. “Training pitch stuff was all pretty walkthrough and low level because of the [tiredness] in the legs.
