Frank Lampard has disputed the notion that Chelsea are "broken" as their second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal matchup against Real Madrid approaches.
As Chelsea gets ready to play Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal, Frank Lampard has denied claims that the team is "broken."
After losing 2-0 last week on the road, the Blues welcome the defending European champions to Stamford Bridge this week.
Chelsea enters that match off of yet another defeat, this time at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, extending their Premier League winless streak to five games.
Although Lampard's team is currently 11th in the table, which is well below expectations, he recognized that they are not irreparably damaged.
We're not where we want to be, but I don't think it's fair to call us broken, he added.
"The league standings are the truth, and we are now trailing this game 2-0. We must fight against that.
"I place a lot of importance on individual and collective accountability. No one else is to blame. Things need to be dealt with right away and in the future. It plays a big role in the game.
"You put in a lot of effort and research the facts, statistics, and gaming output. The players' dedication is not in question; my task is to improve the team so that we can compete at this level.
When Chelsea beat the odds in 2012 by going on an incredible run to win the Champions League under Roberto Di Matteo, another interim manager, Lampard was a player.
Yet Lampard swatted aside the notion that a win over Madrid would stand alongside that triumph.
Nothing that occurs tomorrow, he remarked, "won't be greater than when we won the Champions League." "During the run, we encountered a lot of challenges.
"Of course it would be special given the situation we are in and the team we are up against here. I have no doubt that playing at home will be beneficial.
"I've been to Stamford Bridge on too many Champions League nights to not know that the atmosphere would be fantastic. It is up to us to keep the crowd interested. These could be useful.
