At Tarkwa, in the Western Region, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have dismantled a group of 13 foreigners who were reportedly involved in the production of explosives.

The suspects, who included eight Chinese, three Togolese, an Ivorian, and a Nigerian, were found to be in possession of more than 20,000 illegal explosive devices.

A total of 20,000 explosive charges in the form of dynamite made from ammonium nitrate and roughly 10,000 kg of ammonium nitrate were among the explosives found on the Tarkwa properties of Mohammed Brothers Company Limited and Dakete Mines.

According to a statement released by the GAF yesterday, the majority of the ammonium nitrate was hidden in bags of grain and rice.

The 2nd Infantry Battalion was in charge of the operation, which, according to the statement, "was based on extensive intelligence targeted at clamping down on the manufacturing, sale, and usage of illicit dynamite in regions of the nation, notably mining areas."

The suspects had been examined and sent over to the National Security in Accra for more investigations, according to additional checks by the Daily Graphic.

Locals alarmed

The activities of the syndicate disturbed locals in the area where the explosives were discovered, especially because terrorists were posing a threat to the country's northern border regions.

Some people who spoke with the Daily Graphic claimed that the suspects were operating in the center of Tarkwa, close to a senior high school and other social and economic activity. They claimed that the syndicate's activities posed a threat to lives and property because they were so close to these establishments.

They applauded the GAF for acting since a detonation from the munitions may have had disastrous repercussions.

Dangers

The Daily Graphic was informed by a military source that the Mohammed Brothers and Dakete Mines, the locations of the arrests, were dangerous and that any explosion might do enormous harm.

"It's crucial to inform the public that ammonium nitrate combined with fuel frequently becomes hazardous during explosions." In addition, breathing in high amounts of ammonium nitrate dust might cause respiratory illnesses.

It stated that Mohammed Brothers and Dakete Mines' proximity to a school and an inhabited area in Tarkwa posed a threat.

Rules

An anonymous person from the mining sector, who shared his opinions with the Daily Graphic, stated the usage of explosives in mines was subject to tight regulations.

"Regulators in the sector must grant a permit to each mine that employs explosives." The mine is then built with a certified storage area and a magazine.
