The foot ailment that forced Lisandro Martinez, a defender for Manchester United, to stop his season early last week has been successfully treated through surgery.
Following a high-profile signing from Ajax, Martinez has established himself as a United fan favorite in his debut season. He has been among the team's top performers despite having to adapt to a new nation, so it was a huge blow when he was substituted against Sevilla.
In the last moments of the game at Old Trafford, the 2022 World Cup champion was jogging with the ball when he abruptly collapsed to the ground clutching his foot without being touched by an opponent.
International teammates Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna helped Martinez leave the field before he was stretchered back to the locker room and into the dressing room.
Initial worries about a possible Achilles injury and a protracted absence were quickly dispelled. Martinez won't be able to play again this season, but the real issue was a fractured metatarsal, which is a less significant issue.
Following his foot surgery this week, he commented on social media from his hospital bed, "Everything went incredibly well, thanks to God!"
Thank you very much for your messages. The recovery is now the main priority.
Raphael Varane, who was supposed to return to action this season but was still out for a "few weeks," was also lost by United manager Erik ten Hag in the Sevilla match.
United has lost both of its chosen starting center backs in the span of one game. That implies that Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, who last regularly played alongside one another in 2020–21 before being demoted, will have the chance to begin a run of games.
Until Varane recovers, depth in that part of the pitch could be a concern. Luke Shaw, a left-back, has ably stepped in at the center of the defense so far this season, but reports this week have surfaced that Phil Jones has not been able to complete a single training session under Ten Hag due to the recurrence of a long-standing knee injury.
Jones is not a registered member of United's Premier League or Europa League teams.
