The Greater Accra Area residents who live in flood-prone areas would benefit from early warning of floods so they may take precautions to save their lives and property.
The procedure for selecting a service provider will be finalized in order for the deployment to take place before the main rainy season begins. The design of the flood early warning system has been finished.
Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister of Works and Housing, said this yesterday in Accra during a news conference in anticipation of the approaching rainy season.
"Assessing our preparation against floods ahead of the rainy season" was the focus of the event.
He said that the government's extensive effort to combat floods in the country included the deployment of the device. as part of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) initiative, in communities that are vulnerable.
The $200 million GARID project, which was carried out in cooperation with the World Bank, has seen the government make notable progress in the implementation of initiatives aimed to reduce the danger of flooding and deal with problems with solid waste management in the Greater Accra Area, he added.

The Ghana Meteorological Authority will provide information on impending rainfall to an installed radar, which will use that information to determine where floods will occur.
Information will be organized and distributed through conventional and social media to areas in danger of flooding from a central location.
The information will also be provided to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

Mr. Asenso-Boakye said the government was addressing exigencies, such as the persistent de-silting of drains, during the impending rainy season.
At hot places like Kasoa Millennium City, Adenta Sakora, Nsakyi, Dawhenya, the Dome Railway Crossing, New Legon, Santor, Adenta, Sango, and Naapladjor, he claimed that de-silting work had already been done.
In addition, ahead of the rainy season, we have used all of the resources at our disposal to build new drains and upgrade old ones, with a focus on vulnerable neighborhoods.
While there has been progress, we recognize that many other villages' drainage infrastructure has to be improved. The Ministry of Finance and I are now discussing this issue.
In addition to participatory community upgrades, he claimed that the GARID initiative was also addressing localized flooding in areas by, among other things, installing drains.
He said that part will help Accra residents Alogboshie and Akweteyman.
Retention ponds were built at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission location to hold significant amounts of water that would have otherwise poured towards the city center and caused floods. "To complete that design, our technical team is collaborating with the consultant," he continued.
Following the conclusion of the necessary procurement procedures, Mr. Asenso-Boakye stated that projects such as performance-based dredging of the Odaw River and drainage enhancement works at Achimota, Nima, and Kaneshie were ready to begin.
