President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is said to have decided on Justice Getrude Torkornoo as the new Chief Justice before the present Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, retires in May of this year.


The Council of State of Ghana has already approved the appointment of Justice Torkornoo as the new head of Ghana's judiciary, according to a recent article by graphic.com.gh.



She would be Ghana's third female chief justice and the third chief judge to be chosen by President Akufo-Addo.


Justice Profile Judith Torkornoo


Author and judge Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo is from Ghana. She was formerly an Appeals Court judge who was nominated for a position on the Supreme Court in November 2019 and vetted on December 10, 2019.


She was inaugurated on December 17, 2019. She has written plays, novels, academic essays, lectures, and articles in addition to law.


Gertrude Torkornoo is a native of Winneba in Ghana's Central Region. She was born in Cape Town on September 11, 1962. She completed her secondary schooling at Wesley Girls' High School, where she received her ordinary level diploma, and at Achimota School, where she received her advanced level diploma.


She received her tertiary education at the University of Ghana, where she also earned her law degree in 1986.


Torkornoo completed an internship at Nabarro Nathanson in London and volunteered at the FIDA Legal Aid Service before beginning work as a pupil associate at the Accra legal firm Fugar & Co. She came back to the company, Fugar & Co.

She joined Sozo Law Consult in January 1997 and served as managing partner until May 2004, when she was named a justice of the High Court of Ghana. Before being promoted to the Court of Appeal in October 2012, she served as a judge on the High Court.


Prior to her nomination for the position of Supreme Court Justice in November 2019, she served as a justice of the Court of Appeals. The day of her inauguration was December 17, 2019.


Before being appointed as a Supreme Court justice, Torkornoo held a number of executive positions, including Chief Editor for the Development of the Judicial Ethics Training Manual, Vice-Chair of the Editorial Committee of the Association of Magistrates and Judges, and Supervising Judge of Commercial Courts.

Vice-Chair of the Judiciary's Internship and Clerkship Program as well as the E-Justice Steering/Oversight Committee


Also, she serves on the Judicial Training Institute's governing board and as faculty at the institute.
