Justice's Profile As Anin-Yeboah steps down, Ghana's next Chief Justice will be Gertrude Torkornoo.


Before the current Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, retires in May of this year, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is said to have chosen Justice Getrude Torkornoo as his replacement.


According to a new report by graphic.com.gh, Ghana's Council of State has already approved the appointment of Justice Torkornoo as the country's new chief justice.


She would be the third Chief Justice appointed by President Akufo-Addo, and the third woman to hold the position.


Justice's Personality Torkornoo, Gertrude


Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo is a judge and author from Ghana. Formerly an Appeals Court judge, she was nominated to the Supreme Court in November 2019 and vetted on December 10, 2019.


She took office on December 17, 2019. She has written books, plays, academic essays, articles, and presentations in addition to law.


Gertrude Torkornoo is from Winneba in Ghana's Central Region. She was born in Cape Coast on September 11, 1962. She completed her secondary education at Wesley Girls' High School for the ordinary level and Achimota School for the advanced level.


She attended the University of Ghana and graduated from the Ghana School of Law in 1986.


Torkornoo worked as a volunteer at the FIDA Legal Aid Service and interned at Nabarro Nathanson in London before joining Fugar & Co. as a pupil associate. In 1994, she returned to the firm (Fugar & Co., a law firm) to become its director.


She joined Sozo Law Consult in January 1997 and served as Managing Partner until May 2004, when she was appointed to the High Court of Ghana. She served as a judge on the High Court until October 2012, when she was promoted to the Court of Appeal.



She was a Court of Appeal justice until her nomination for the position of Supreme Court Judge in November 2019. She was sworn in on December 17, 2019.


Torkornoo served as Supervising Judge of Commercial Courts, Chair of the Association of Magistrates and Judges' Editorial Committee, Chief Editor for the development of the Judicial Ethics Training Manual, Vice-Chair of the E-Justice Steering/Oversight Committee, and Vice-Chair of the Internship and Clerkship Programme for the Judiciary prior to her appointment as Supreme Court justice.


She is also a Judicial Training Institute Faculty Member and a member of the Judicial Training Institute's Governing Board.
