Pep Guardiola's reaction to the devastation Leroy Sane summarizes
Pep Guardiola led Manchester City into the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday evening at the Allianz Arena, defeating his former employers and a slew of ex-players.
Pep Guardiola showed his sensitive side as he consoled former teammate Leroy Sane following Manchester City's win against Bayern Munich.
The defending Premier League champions drew 1-1 with the German giants at the Allianz Arena, with Erling Haaland and Joshua Kimmich scoring. That was enough to ensure City's advancement to the last four, thanks to a 4-1 aggregate victory.
While Guardiola was seen celebrating his team's victory in Bavaria, he was also seen being somewhat more magnanimous. Following the final whistle, the Spaniard was seen in the tunnel consoled German winger Sane.
The pair exchanged a few words, with the former Manchester City star appearing to wipe his eyes after Bayern's exit. Guardiola then appeared to check the 27-year-old's injured lip, which he supposedly got after being punched by teammate Sadio Mane.
Sane started the game at the Allianz Arena against his previous club and wasted a superb first-half opportunity, rolling his shot wide of Ederson's goal after a one-on-one with the Brazilian. After the game, he stated that Bayern deserved more and that their exit 'annoyed' him.
"Today was a good game from us, a strong game," the German wideman told BT Sport. "I have to score and make it 1-0." City is under a lot of strain; it's difficult because we lost our first game away 3-0; it shouldn't have occurred; today, we could have done a lot; it's difficult for me with a great chance.
"I think we had good control, won a lot of balls in midfield, and if I score, I want to know how the game went." I'm familiar with the team and how strong they are at home; conceding three goals away in the first leg is difficult, but they know how to control the game.
"It's extremely bothersome how it went, particularly how we played today, the team played extremely well and I'm proud of that, we have to keep up the spirit and focus on the league."
After defeating Bayern, City now faces another huge challenge as they seek their first European title. Guardiola's team was set to face Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid after defeating another Premier League team in the semi-finals, Chelsea.
In other news, Sane's Bayern Munich have been forced to focus on their pursuit for an 11th straight Bundesliga title after departures from the Champions League and DFB-Pokal since Thomas Tuchel's arrival in Bavaria.
