According to the Regional Director of Health Services for the Upper East Region, Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi, there were 43 maternal fatalities in 2021 and 27 in 2022.

He emphasized that this reflects a reduction in institutional maternal mortality to 65 per 100,000 live births from 98 per 100,000 live births in 2021, a performance improvement of 91.7%.

The regrettable fatalities, according to Dr. Dzotsi, who was addressing an annual performance review meeting, were thoroughly investigated, and the health professionals, community members, and other important stakeholders put the lessons they had learned into practice.

The subject of the review meeting was:

"The role of quality data in enhancing outcomes of health delivery."

He pointed out that the regional institutional stillbirth rate decreased from 14% in 2021 to 11% in 2022, falling short of the national objective of 11.5%.

Despite the fact that human resources remained a significant problem during the year under review, the directorate, according to him, was able to recruit several crucial health professionals into the area to supplement the current workforce.

He said that "we attracted six additional doctors to the region, increasing the number of medical officers in the region from 53 in 2021 to 59 in 2022," emphasizing that "the doctor to population ratio decreased from 1:24,097 in 2021 to 1:22,518 in 2022."

The regional director stated, "It is noteworthy that we attracted a physician specialist who is working tirelessly to secure the creation of a dialysis facility at the regional hospital to accommodate patients with kidney-related diseases.

Speaking of difficulties, he stated that several childhood immunization programs have seen a fall, including Penta 3 coverage, which had a record low of 87.4 percent in 2022 as opposed to 92 percent in 2021.

According to him, the Measles-Rubella 2 coverage was only 74.7% compared to the objective of 95% and was caused by a lack of regular immunizations in the second half of 2022, the fighting in Bawku, problems with paperwork, and insufficient motorbikes for outreach activities.

He urged participants, health partners, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and others to join forces to help the region overcome its health delivery issues and enhance the health of its residents.

He highlighted that the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) had sent 50 tricycle ambulances to the area to improve neonatal and maternal health services.
