Henrietta Lamptey, the Ag. Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, has lamented the lack of vital records and civil registrations in the nation.

Despite the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system's lengthy history in the nation, the quality of the data it produces and the volume of such occurrences it registers remain low, according to the expert.

She said that the death registration issue was significantly more serious.

Mrs. Lamptey was addressing a workshop for organizations whose core business was the creation of CRVS.

The registrar did express the desire that participants would leave with the necessary information and abilities to enhance the registration of important events.

She said it would assist the nation in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Workshop

The 4-day workshop was a component of the activities of the CRVS system improvement framework project in Ghana and was hosted by the Births and Deaths Registry in partnership with the Ghana Statistical Service.

Participants from the Ghana Police Service, National Identification Authority, Judicial Service, Ghana Health Service, National Road Safety Authority, Office of the Attorney General's Department, and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) attended the workshop, which was sponsored by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

Others include the Registrar General's Department, the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, the Pathology Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, and other organizations and people with knowledge of the CRVS system in Ghana.

To help the participants better comprehend the CRVS business process models, a variety of subjects were covered.

They were warned to operate CRVS like a company by putting the needs of the customer first.

After that, they were divided into task teams to come up with answers for a variety of civil registration and vital statistics issues, including marriage, divorce, birth registration, and death registration, among others.

Enhancing CRVS

UNECA is dedicated to assisting in the improvement of the nation's CRVS system, according to Dr. William Muhwava, Chief of the Demographic and Social Statistics Section at the African Centre for Statistics of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

He praised the institutions and organizations for the job they had already accomplished. Participants were advised by Dr. Muhwava to drive and own the CRVS system.

He said that Ghana needed to take a more proactive approach in light of the current donor fatigue to make sure the nation did things right this time.

Dr. Felicia Dake, a consultant for the project, said the workshop had brought together several CRVS value chain stakeholders to critically assess the system's current state and establish a sustainable plan to upgrade and operate the system effectively and efficiently.
