Paul Scholes believes Erik ten Hag is to blame for David de Gea's failure at Manchester United.

Paul Scholes believes that Erik ten Hag's system is to blame for most of David De Gea's troubles at Manchester United this season.

David De Gea, according to Paul Scholes, is unable to play under the system Erik ten Hag intends to implement at Manchester United.

Ten Hag's team suffered a humiliating three-goal defeat to Sevilla on Thursday night, thereby ending their European campaign. The beleaguered De Gea was held responsible for all three goals, most notably the third, when he air-kicked a clearance to allow the hosts an open goal.

On an abysmal evening for United, Yousef En-Nesyri scored either side of Loic Bade's header. The outcome and nature of the performance will cast doubt on the futures of several players, including De Gea.

The Spaniard's contract at Old Trafford expires this summer, and despite continued talks, no agreement has been reached. United have also been linked with signing a goalkeeper to replace De Gea this summer.

"He was making me nervous the whole night with the game he was having," Scholes remarked of De Gea's performance after the game on BT Sport. "I believe he was making the entire team nervous."

"No one knew whether he was going to try to contain it or clear it. I'm still not clear what he was trying to accomplish."

His colleague BT pundit Owen Hargreaves agreed, saying, "When he comes out, he has no idea what he is going to do." He should simply put his foot through it, but he is unsure. He tried to stop the ball with his foot, but it was impossible with that ball."

"De Gea is a brilliant shot-stopper who has been a tremendous servant to this football club," Hargreaves concluded. But he has foot problems, which has manifested at times this season with the way United is attempting to play.

"Ten Hag wants his squad to play out of the back. However, the goals allowed by United were the result of this. So it appears that he is unsuitable for that philosophy."

Scholes agreed, implying that the Spaniard may be replaced this summer and that the problem was the style of play he was being asked to play: "He has been a fantastic goalkeeper for this club, but he will never be a fantastic footballer."
