Dr. Samuel Kofi Darkwa, a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), has urged political parties, in particular the government's New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition's National Democratic Congress (NDC), to make sure that the nation's democracy benefits future generations.
For that to happen, he asserted, political parties—including the NPP and the NDC—must reaffirm their commitment to combating corruption and ensuring the accountability, openness, probity, and integrity of all their political leaders.
This was due to the fact that, as he pointed out, such ideas were crucial components required to address the multiple socio-economic problems the nation was presently experiencing.
On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, Dr. Darkwa delivered a speech during a book launch at the British Council auditorium in Accra.
The book "Revolution and Democracy in Ghana: The Politics of Jerry John Rawlings" examines Rawlings' proposals for a radical democratization of Ghana that would directly include common citizens in the country's political and economic decision-making processes.
The 220-page book, written by Professor Emeritus Jeffrey Haynes, recounted Ghana's stormy past and showed Rawlings' transformation from a fiery revolutionary to a democratic politician skilled at winning elections.
It also looks at how the government managed to maintain control while directing the halting of the economic collapse and the resumption of growth.
Demand
Dr. Darkwa opined that given the nation's socioeconomic trajectory, it was wise for all political parties and the populace to consider if their demands for democracy were producing the intended outcomes.
J. J. Rawlings was portrayed by the speaker as a realistic leader who battled against corruption and financial hardship.
He expressed sadness that certain political leaders did not uphold the ideals that Rawlings stood for, including responsibility, probity, and honesty.
"Chairman Rawlings had leadership skills in his DNA; he had an innate understanding of human nature, which enabled him to effectively lead his team," said Kofi Totobi Quakyi, a former minister of information.
Having faith that the book will "challenge the false narratives that have long obscured the true legacy of Rawlings for future generations," he expressed hope for its impact.
