Sir Alex Ferguson has told Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag what he must do with David de Gea after Sevilla loss
In a recent match, Manchester United lost to Sevilla in the Europa League, with David De Gea's poor performance coming under scrutiny. While Erik ten Hag, the manager of United's next opponents, Ajax, has praised De Gea in the past, some United fans are calling for him to take inspiration from Sir Alex Ferguson's past mistakes.
Ferguson, a United legend, has previously spoken about the difficulties of managing ageing players and the importance of being ruthless and selling underperforming players. He revealed that it was challenging to move players on to new clubs, especially when they had been with the team for a long time and had been fantastic players for him, like the 1994 back four of Paul Parker, Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, and Dennis Irwin.
The former manager detailed the process of letting players go, which often involved the youth coach and welfare chap coming in with the player being let go. The club would try to get the player a new team, and they would explain the situation, but Ferguson admitted that it was a terrible thing to do, especially when dealing with young players.
Ferguson talked about how devastating it was to take away a young player's ambition and hopes of playing for Manchester United in front of 75,000 people and going to Wembley in a final. He stated that he hated having to let young players go, as it was a sore thing to do.
United fans are now calling on ten Hag to take inspiration from Ferguson's past comments and be ruthless with De Gea, who has been with the team for 12 years but has been making more errors leading to an opposition goal in all competitions than any other Premier League keeper since the start of last season.
Ten Hag has refused to single out any players after the Sevilla match, including De Gea, but negotiations over a new deal for the Spanish shot-stopper are thought to be at an advanced stage. As United look to rebuild and regain their status as one of the top teams in Europe, it remains to be seen whether ten Hag will take inspiration from Ferguson's past mistakes and be ruthless with underperforming players like De Gea.
