According to the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, the $135 million Obetsebi-Lamptey junction project in Accra's capital city has not been shelved.
According to him, the project has been temporarily put on hold to allow for project re-alignment. This project is one of several measures being carried out by the government to improve urban transit in Accra's western regions.
The Minister stated that any such notion was "erroneous" when speaking to Ghanaian journalists on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, following inspection visits of several road projects in Accra.
The beach road project had also been placed on hold, he added, "because we are re-aligning the projects and putting a few issues together."
"If you visit each of them, you will find skeletal employees there." Therefore, he claimed, the initiatives have not been abandoned.
All major projects, including the Obetsebi Lamptey Junction and the Beach Road, will restart in the next four weeks, according to Mr. Amoako-Atta.
President Akufo-Addo laid the foundation for the $135 million Obetsebi-Lamptey interchange road in August 2021.
The Obetsebi-Lamptey road project, which is the same as the Tema Motorway Roundabout project, is being handled by M/S Queiroz Galvao-UK International under a design and construct contract.
The project entails building a three-tier junction with a ground-level roundabout at the Obetsebi-Lamptey Circle.
The third tier would consist of a north-south flyover on the Ring Route West, linking the Ring Road from the Royal Chapel Church to the Central Mosque at Abossey-Okai. The second tier will be an east-west flyover connecting the Graphic Road to the Kaneshie-Mallam route.
Around 90% of the work, according to Mr. Amoako-Atta, had already been finished, and the remaining 30% would need to be finished in three months for it to be ready for commission. Inspection
The minister looked at active road projects such as the Flowerpot roundabout flyover, the 5.8 km School Junction-Motorway link, the Tema roundabout, and the site of the potential Burma Hills roundabout.
He expressed his happiness at the method in which Messrs. Oswal Investments Limited and China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited were carrying out their operations.
He pleaded with the contractors to uphold strict safety standards and evaluate the drawbacks of the project in order to minimize them as much as possible.
"I recognize your expertise. There are some contractors who believe they are doing the public a favor when they build roads.
"In this nation, we are not doing anyone any favors. They have assigned us a task. Therefore, we must make sure that we maintain high safety standards while building roads, whether they are in urban areas or on the motorway, he emphasized.
"I am satisfied and joyful about what I have discovered when browsing this website." He consented, saying, "I, the Minister representing the Employer, wish to separate you on your shoulders."
The East Legon vehicular underpass was built after the Flowerpot project, which consists of one mainline bridge (802m), two ramp bridges (220m), four auxiliary roads (2.5km), and ancillary works, failed to relieve traffic.
The actual amount of work completed is 42%, and it has been challenging to move the GWCL 33 water mains through the East Legon underpass and to provide and maintain traffic control systems during construction.
Due to Ghana hosting the 13th African Games this year, the School Junction project has begun to take off.
A new Olympic-sized stadium is being built in Borteyman as part of the preparations, and an access road to the stadium has to be created because the route was not designed.
