As the EU's CO2 ban gets closer, the future of synthetic fuels is still a mystery.
We now know that the Goodwood Revival will host the first all-synthetic fuel race with a grid of 30 pre-66 Porsche 911 models, making this year's event one to remember. A race of this nature as part of the Fordwater Trophy has never been held at the renowned circuit in its 75-year history.
The timing of this race, which uses only e-fuels, is important because the European Union is about to ban CO2, and what that means for synthetic fuels
Although the majority of automakers have not explicitly rejected this ban, many have criticized the absence of a clear enough provision for synthetic fuels after the 2035 deadline. After all, the restriction applies solely to CO2, not to internal combustion itself.
By facilitating this race, Goodwood is making one more suggestion to specialists that there is an undeniable future for manufactured or e-powers, both out and about and in hustling.
After opposition from nations like Germany, the rules for the 2035 CO2 ban were clarified a few weeks ago. They now clearly allow for synthetic fuels, but they do so with a major drawback. Despite the fact that vehicles will be permitted to run on carbon-neutral fuel after 2035, this may be passable assuming these vehicles run exclusively on these fuel types. We explained why this is a major obstacle to the industry's adoption of e-fuel because it will require more significant modifications to gas-powered vehicles and infrastructure like gas stations.
However, if major stakeholders are able to provide justification, it is evident that the ruling could be altered over time. Additionally, despite EU restrictions on e-fuels, the technology is moving forward in the United States. A worldwide forerunner in manufactured energy, HIF, will be opening an office in Texas here in 2027.
Even though a combustion engine burns both fossil fuel and synthetic fuel in the same way, their manufacturing processes are very different. Oil is refined to make gasoline, but electrolysis is used to extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to make an e-fuel like Porsche's. There is much more to it than that, including a unique list of advantages and disadvantages of synthetic fuels, which we have previously discussed in greater detail.
But back to Goodwood. The all-synthetic fuel race is coming at a time when Goodwood has a lot to celebrate, so it should be quite the spectacle. On Carol Shelby's 100th birthday this year, the Revival will also pay tribute to him. In addition, it marks the 30th anniversary of the Festival of Speed, the 25th anniversary of the Revival, and the 75th anniversary of the Motor Circuit.
The 25th Goodwood Recovery will be held from September 8 to 10 this year.
