Borussia Dortmund may take the lead later in the day after Mainz overcame a goal deficit to defeat Bayern Munich 3-1 on Saturday.
Bayern Munich's dismal start under Thomas Tuchel's leadership continued on Saturday at the Mewa Arena when the champions were defeated 3-1 by Mainz.
After being eliminated by Manchester City in the Champions League last week, Die Roten appeared to be on the road to recovery. However, they were shockingly defeated by Tuchel's previous team as Bayern's winless skid reached four games.
Bayern took a well-earned lead in the first half thanks to a close-range goal from Sadio Mane, but Mainz showed potential and built on it after the break when Ludovic Ajorque eliminated it.
17 minutes from the end, Leandro Barreiro gave Mainz the lead, and shortly after, Aaron Martin's superb goal put an end to Bayern, giving Borussia Dortmund the chance to overtake them later in the day.
In the 15th minute, Mane coolly clipped over Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner, giving Bayern an early lead, but his goal was ruled offside and disallowed.
But just before the half-hour mark, the visitors did score, with Mane scoring at the back post with the simplest of headed finishes after Joao Cancelo's left-wing cross.
However, the hosts were worth their leveller after the hour.
Lee Jae-sung's shot was just parried by Yann Sommer, and Ajorque was there to score from a few yards away.
For Mainz, that was only the beginning.
Eight minutes later, Karim Onisiwo met Ajorque's flick-on and deflected Josip Stanisic away before setting up Barreiro, who easily buried the ball.
With 11 minutes left, Martin scored the game-winning goal by slamming a left-footed shot from the edge of the box into the bottom-right corner.
Bo Svensson, the head coach of Mainz, played 100 times for Mainz under Tuchel's leadership and entered this match as the only coach in the club's history with a better points-per-game record (in the Bundesliga) than the former Chelsea manager (1.48).
He stunningly defeated his former boss here, becoming the first coach to defeat Bayern in all three of his home league games since Volker Finke with Freiburg between 1993 and 1996.
