Why Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag has two huge reasons to thank Newcastle for Tottenham thrashing

Newcastle's 6-1 win over Tottenham not only pleased Eddie Howe, but Erik ten Hag may have smiled wryly when the final whistle sounded.

Newcastle played furiously at St James' Park, scoring five goals in the first 25 minutes.

Harry Kane managed to pull back a goal in the second half, but Callum Wilson quickly canceled that, as Newcastle overtook Manchester United in third on goal difference.

The win saw the Warblers take an important step towards Champions League qualification, denting Tottenham's European hopes.

But on a day of excitement for Newcastle fans, the Reds supporters may well have something to cheer for. The result cements Manchester United's place in the top four, with Ten Hag one game behind Newcastle and nine points ahead of Tottenham, the team they will face next in the league.

However, the win could also affect Ten Hag's transfer plans.

How the loss to Tottenham could affect Man Utd

Kane has long been rumored to be leaving North London, with the striker keen to win a title before his career ends.

And Tottenham's crushing defeat to Newcastle could be the last string to convince Kane to pursue another move.

It is believed the England captain is keen to play in the Champions League and if he misses out, the club could be forced to part ways with their all-time leading scorer.

Meanwhile, Old Trafford has been heralded as a potential destination for the 29-year-old, with Ten Hag in the market for an elite nine this summer.

Indeed, it is likely Kane will want to stay in England as he looks to break Alan Shearer's all-time Premier League scoring record.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is likely to play tough on any potential deal, but the club may have lost leverage in negotiations following their humiliating defeat.
