Peter Schmeichel believes the FA Cup final is a "great opportunity" for Manchester United to "test themselves" against "one of the best in the world" at Manchester City.
MU's performance in all competitions this season is very good. They won the League Cup in February, with Erik ten Hag scoring for the first time in an attempt to win the silverware as United manager.
They have since reached the FA Cup final, beating Brighton in the semi-finals.
Reaching the final the same week, United were knocked out of the Europa League, losing to six-time champions Sevilla in the quarter-finals. The Red Devils are also maintaining good form in the Premier League. Indeed, they are currently fourth, level on points with third-placed Newcastle United, who have played one more game than United.
After all, Ten Hag's team is having a pretty good season. This increase is necessary, as they have failed to break into the top four of the Premier League in four of the last seven seasons.
Moreover, before this season, their last title was in the 2016/17 season when they won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho. As such, it is clear that they are on the right track under Ten Hag.
Schmeichel thinks Man Utd is smaller than Man City
Despite the upward trajectory they are on, United legend Schmeichel believes local rivals Man City are the biggest team right now.
"As Manchester United we really say we are the biggest club in the world, you also have to compete at a very, very high level," he told BBC MOTD.
"Right now you just have to look at what City have, we can't match at the moment."
Indeed, City have won the Premier League four of the last five seasons and they are on the hunt for the title again this season. Moreover, they have at least reached the semi-finals of the Champions League 3 seasons in a row. FA Cup final is a big test for MU
While City have clearly improved their rivals in recent years, Schmeichel feels things are leveling off. Above all, he believes the FA Cup final - Manchester's first final in a tournament final - is a great opportunity for United to test themselves.
"We're on the upswing, but it's really a good opportunity to go out there and play against one of the best teams in the world," he said.
Whoever wins, the final between the two opponents is sure to be a big one. Glenn Murray believes this historic event is one that people around the world will join in on. "The whole world will want to see it, they'll be watching - United vs City, I think it's going to be a good final," he said.
