Barcelona's brick wall provides the framework for an outstanding victory
Barcelona played against Atletico Madrid in a match that had the feeling of an end-of-season ‘dead rubber’. However, there was still much to admire about Barcelona’s play against a difficult opponent. Atletico Madrid had been unbeaten in 13 games before Sunday’s match, and Cholo Simeone’s side had gone with a five-man defence as well as playing on the counter-attack, which had troubled Barcelona in the past. There were some scary moments during the match, including two from ex-Barca man, Antoine Griezmann, including one in the opening minute, and Atleti were more of a threat the longer the game went on as they went in search of the equalizer.
Barcelona’s defense had the game under control for long periods, and they looked at ease during various passages of play, which may have given the impression that Kounde, Araujo, Alonso, and Balde were a little lazy. However, comfortable might be a better description, and that lack of panic has only come about as a result of the trust between each other and a stellar campaign so far, which could end up being a record-breaking one in terms of goals conceded.
Ter Stegen has been nothing short of immaculate, and he was again on Sunday as he commanded his area with aplomb. He is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world right now, ahead of the likes of Thibaut Courtois, and others. Moving further up the pitch, Frenkie de Jong's return made a significant difference. He gave the midfield the dynamism that Gavi offers, but with more control. It also allowed the hosts greater flexibility in terms of attack given de Jong’s ability to provide an option as the extra man.
Though Ferran Torres only played for an hour, he deserves a pat on the back for his industry and effervescence. He consistently kept his markers busy, and his finish for the opener showed everyone what he is capable of, even if we’ve seen precious little of that over the season. Pedri's return was a joy to see as well. He is a generational talent, and it is a moniker that sits well on the young Spaniard’s shoulders. He is effortless on the football pitch and an utter joy to behold.
Raphinha was excellent on the opposite wing to Ferran, and he can blow hot and cold, but he gave his all on Sunday. If Robert Lewandowski had not been so selfish, the Brazilian would’ve bagged a goal to add to his assist, and another if he could’ve reacted better to the centre-forward’s cross. He looked dejected to be brought off late on, and perhaps didn’t see the significance of Xavi allowing him the standing ovation that his performance deserved.
Overall, Barcelona played well against a difficult opponent, and their defense was in control for most of the match. Ter Stegen was exceptional, and de Jong's return made a significant difference in midfield. Ferran Torres, Pedri, and Raphinha all played well and contributed to Barcelona's victory. It was a joy to watch Pedri's effortless movement on the pitch, and Raphinha's performance deserved the standing ovation he received from Xavi.
