As the Man City title battle takes a turn following the draw with Southampton, two Arsenal players break their silence
Arsenal's hopes for a Premier League title took a blow after a disappointing draw against Southampton at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners had been on a two-game drawing streak in the division after squandering two-goal leads against Liverpool and West Ham. They were looking to return to their winning ways against bottom-placed Southampton but the Saints showed up to spoil the party with Carlos Alcaraz capitalising on an error to put the visitors ahead within just 27 seconds. Theo Walcott, who refused to celebrate in front of his old home crowd, doubled the lead for Southampton. Gabriel Martinelli pulled a goal back for the hosts before the break, but Duje Caleta-Car's free header early in the second half saw Southampton restore their two-goal lead.
Arsenal made plenty of changes and their efforts to make a comeback paid off as Martin Odegaard's curled effort from range brought the Gunners within touching distance. Bukayo Saka drew the game level with a crucial goal, but Arsenal failed to convert a vital fourth goal and had to settle for a draw. Despite holding a five-point lead over Manchester City, their title aspirations hang in the balance as their rivals have two games in hand, as well as a head-to-head match in the coming days.
Not many Arsenal players took to social media after the match, with only substitute Leandro Trossard and Reiss Nelson expressing their frustration. Trossard posted on Instagram saying, "We came close. Frustrating night but we keep fighting," while Nelson posted a photo looking dejected with butterfly emojis as a caption. The result leaves Arsenal with an uncertain future, and it remains to be seen how they will bounce back from such a setback, especially in their match against their biggest challengers. Nonetheless, the Gunners still have a chance to turn things around as their fate remains in their hands for the time being.
